What a cool weekend. I had the pleasure of guesting on not one but TWO podcasts on Saturday! I spent a total of about four hours hanging out in the recording studio with four wonderful friends of mine:
Ben and Steve of Space Lincoln – A monthly podcast devoted to SciFi television shows, but mostly ones in the Trek universe.
AND
Sean and Rick of Collector’s Edition – A pop music appreciation podcast that goes hand-in-hand with their monthly live show at the Upstairs Gallery every month.
I don’t think I’ve had this much fun since my best friend and I crashed an IKEA and performed quiet, impromptu scene exercises in each of the display rooms. <-- I highly recommend this, as it alleviates a lot of the “blah” that can occur from wandering the aisles of IKEA. We didn’t even get thrown out, you guys.
Talking with Ben and Steve was really great, we discussed the overall hits and misses of Trek’s female characters, how they’re written and how they’re utilized in the Trek universe. We covered Major Kira, Seven of Nine, Crusher, Yar, Guinan, Janeway, the Trois (both Deanna and Lwaxana), and a few others. The discussion was at once fun, serious, eye-opening, and hilarious. I truly enjoyed myself.
Some of the people they wanted to cover were either new to me, or singers I had heard of, but never really listened to, so this was the best kind of homework! We did have to shave off some of the people we wanted to talk about due to time, but in the end we still had an impressive and thought-provoking list:
Mark Mulcahy, Nick Lowe, Eva Cassidy, Kanye West (you’ll have to listen to the podcast to understand this one), Tracey Thorn, Aretha Franklin, Andy Partridge, Freddie Mercury, Corin Tucker, Michael Stipe and Joni Mitchell. Four of the names in that list were my picks, but I won’t say which, you’ll have to listen to the podcast!
Ethan, who is a very talented musician that provides sweet, sweet jams for their live show, was not on hand for the podcast, but if you go to their show you'll love how they all work together.
Special thanks to studio engineer and all-around fab gent Adam Goron, who powered through all those hours of us talking about things we love, and will be cutting everything down into pretty podcast packages for your listening enjoyment.
Both of these should come out in the next few weeks, I'll link to 'em when they become available :)
